Bar That Overserved Shut Down

WAUPUN - A Waupun bar that served a Wisconsin man a lethal dose of alcohol won't be serving anything anytime soon.

That bar is The Slammer, and Waupun city officials are now slamming the door on the possibility that any alcohol will be served there for a very long time.

Jesse Drews died after being served 18 shots of hard alcohol as he celebrated his 21st birthday. His blood alcohol level was .339.

Jesse's mom Jody spoke to the TODAY'S TMJ4 I-Team.

"Nobody should go out on their 21st birthday and die. Nobody," Jody Drews said.

Prosecutors say weak alcohol laws made it almost impossible to charge anyone with Jesse's death.

So with no criminal charges, Waupun city leaders have taken matters at The Slammer into their own hands. Tuesday night, the Waupun city concil voted unanimously to revoke The Slammer's beer and liquor licenses for six monthsm and the owner of The Slammer lost her bartender license for a year.

Jody is relieved that The Slammer won't be able to serve anyone else.

"He didn't go to a million different places. It was one place where they knew exactly what they gave him," Jody Drews said.

The city could decide to extend the liquor license revocation beyond the one year.

The I-Team has learned that the owner of The Slammer also does not hold a valid seller's permit with the state, and he also owes delinquent property taxes and license fees.
