Crash Suspect: History Of Substance Abuse
Katie DeLong
OCONOMOWOC - An Oconomowoc man is behind bars accused of killing three people in a car crash Friday.
Jennifer Bukosky was killed, along with her unborn child and her 10-year-old daughter Courtney.
The suspect in that case, Mark Benson, has a history of substance abuse problems that resulted in him losing his medical license.
The I-Team's John Mercure has learned more about Mark Benson and his substance abuse problems.
Benson's addiction issues started with another car crash back in 1990. He says he became addicted to the painkillers that were prescribed to him.
From there, things spiraled out of control.
Mark Benson was in court Monday...a familiar place. Just last Wednesday his license was revoked after a third OWI.
His medical license met a similar fate.
In 1996 it was suspended, but Benson was able to keep practicing medicine until May of 2000, when Benson apparently was admitted to the hospital after taking Vicodin.
His license was suspended, and Benson pleaded guilty to obtaining prescription drugs by fraud.
He got his license back...with limitations, but in June of 2002, Benson was again facing criminal charges, and gave up his license voluntarily.
Benson once again fought to get his license back and began practicing medicine in August 2003.
That didn't last long.
In 2004, licensing records claim Benson was caught for a third time forging prescriptions for himself.
He gave up his license in December 2004.
He hasn't practiced medicine since.
Doctor Benson was given chance after chance to get his life under control.
