The manager of this family restaurant calls the violations "just an oversight." Odyssey Family Restaurant on Appleton Avenue near Pilgrim Road. This popular spot failed its health inspection. Inspectors found food not kept cold enough. Tartar sauce sitting out at 69 degrees. It was thrown out. When the manager showed us around, the tartar sauce was in the fridge. A cooler was kept too warm at 55 degrees. Bleu cheese dressing was at 51. Safe temperature is 41. Sam Tourloukis is the manager. He tells us, "When you're busy and in the middle of the lunch hour and you open it up all the time.. temperature is going to go back up and down." Bean soup was not kept warm enough. Safe temperature is 165. It was measured at 116 degrees. Odyssey was also ordered to do some cleaning. The meat slicer, knives, microwave and food contact surfaces. The owner calls it a "minor thing" and says every thing's cleaned. Not all ready to eat food had expiration dates. Shelf life for prepared food is seven days. Inspectors also found a fly strip hanging over food containers. I asked Tourloukis if a nine page inspection report is something customers should be worried about. He told me no, and that he's been in the food business 40 years. He didn't want to show us the kitchen but insists every thing's been cleaned up. Because of its low inspection score, Odyssey has to pay a higher re inspection fee.
