Dirty Dining: El Rey

By Courtny Gerrish

MILWAUKEE - A long list of violations at an eatery and grocery store. So many violations, even the manager was shocked.

El Rey on 16th and Mineral. Inspectors found a number of cross contamination risks, like raw beef and raw chicken cut on the same meat slicer.

"It's very upsetting to us to see this kind of thing, result, in an inspection," commented manager Nelson Lang.

Lang tells us El Rey is now working with the health department. "We've scheduled cutting times for each individual meat type."

Food was out at room temperature and some food was not kept warm enough. A meat/veggie mix was at 90 degrees. Safe *hot* temperature is 135. Lang claims employees are constantly checking food temperatures.

El Rey did order new equipment to help keep food the correct temperature.

Inspectors also found no expiration dates on food in the deli. Lang said, "We go through these, at the most, a two day period." El Rey is now date marking meat and cheese in the deli area.

The ice machine and juice equipment were not clean. Inspectors also noted fruit flies in the juice area.

Trays were stored on the floor in the meat department, and there was no hot water at hand sinks in the restaurant and bakery. "Myself and other managers here need to step in to help the department managers and make sure they're following the guidelines that were put in front of us," Lang said.

El Rey is developing better procedures and guidelines, with the help of the health department. The grocery store and eatery will also hold food handling training for employees.
