Dirty Dining: Lena's

By Courtny Gerrish

MILWAUKEE - Problems with food before it gets to your plate. Inspectors found repeat violations at a local grocery store.

Lena's Food Market at Holton and Concordia. This isn't the first time we've stopped by. Mike Gundrum with Lena's Quality Control Department told us, "well you know in any business you're gonna have violations."

But Lena's continues to have some of the same problems. Things like rotten produce. Yellow squash, Brussels sprouts and cabbage had to be thrown out.

Ham and smoked sausages in a display cooler were not kept cold enough. Inspectors noted too much meat was packed into the cooler. Gundrum said, "due to the holidays sometimes we do that in order to make sure our customers have what they need."

Another temperature problem, with the display freezers. They aren't doing the job. Turkey, Cornish hens and chicken were not kept frozen. "Sometimes we do miss something," Gundrum commented. "They'll come in and show us what we need to do, and we try to take care of it then and there."

The hand sink in the meat department was blocked with plates and packing material. Employees can't use it to wash their hands. That's a repeat violation. Gundrum told us, "I have to take responsibility for that. I have stepped my game up, and I am getting on my crews about it."

We were told the sink is now cleared out, and there are hand washing signs posted. Lena's has also ordered new display freezers.
