Dirty Dining: Sala da Pranzo

By Courtny Gerrish

Milwaukee: A popular spot by UW Milwaukee has a rodent problem. Here's what else was going on in the kitchen. Sala da Pranzo on Hampshire near Downer Avenue. Inspectors saw employees handling food customers would eventually eat, with bare hands. Co-owner Teresa Balistreri told us gloves are at every station, and employees are trained to use them. Inspectors found mouse droppings in some areas of the kitchen and rat droppings in the basement. The restaurant is working with an exterminator. I was also told they cleaned the place top to bottom. Not all potentially hazardous food had expiration dates. Shelf life on prepared food is seven days. Sala da Pranzo was also ordered to do some cleaning. The slicer had debris on it. Soda guns at the bar were slimy and the floor in the restaurant was dirty and greasy. Since their inspection one of the owners tells me Sala da Pranzo has revisited health guidelines with employees.
