Dirty Dining: Lake City Restaurant & Lounge

By Courtny Gerrish

MILWAUKEE - Noted by food critics for its ribs, one south side restaurant had some violations to clean up. A clean health inspection report from 2007 greets guests at Lake City Restaurant & Lounge in the Best Western on Howell, by the airport. This time around, there were some violations. Inspectors found pasta labeled September 9th. The inspection was on the 24th. Cooked food can only be around for seven days. "It may have been overseen that we didn't toss yet, but it would not have been served to guests,” Restaurant Manager Krista Wianecki said. Inspectors also found no expiration dates on some cooked food. Everything is now marked. They also found a drawer cooler at 48 degrees. The safe temperature is 41. That’s an equipment problem that has been fixed. Executive Chef Joe Boyce said he's discouraged by the health inspection report. "I took it very personally, and I know the rest of the staff took it personally,” Boyce said. Inspectors also found sausages not kept warm enough on the buffet line. The restaurant changed its system. They also found fruit flies in the coffee area. A pest control company is working on it. There were also problems with the hot water supply. "Lake City" cleaned things up ahead of schedule. "Working with educating and training my staff to make sure that the sanitation rules and laws are followed,” Boyce said. "Lake City" managers say they have a clean kitchen and plan to dispute some of the inspectors’ findings. Click on the link under related content to see restaurant inspection reports.
