Dirty DiningDirty Dining: Chicago Red HotsBy Courtny Gerrish
MILWAUKEE – A cook touching customers’ food with his bare hands, and temperature problems: these are a few of the problems inspectors found at a local restaurant on the city’s northwest side.
At Chicago Red Hots on 91st and Brown Deer, inspectors found the gyro meat sliced, but only partially cooked.
Also, the cook was touching customers’ food, like cheese, bread and lunch meat, with his bare hands. That's a cross contamination risk.
The place also had a number of unsafe food temperatures. A large bin of fried chicken was found sitting out at 53 degrees. A cooler was kept too warm. Sour cream was at 56 degrees, and lunch meat was as warm as 52 degrees. The safe temperature is 41 degrees.
A pan of roast beef was also not being kept warm enough.
Inspectors also found fruit flies and mouse droppings in the restaurant.
The owner was not there when TODAY’S TMJ4 stopped by.
