Dirty Dining: Schlotzky's Deli

MILWAUKEE – Health inspectors found some problems in the kitchen for a popular sandwich chain.

At Schlotzyk’s Deli on 68th and Brown Deer Road, inspectors wrote up employees for not washing their hands. One worker went from cleaning to preparing customer’s food.

The owner, Gregg Sommers, said by phone the employees did not wash their hands, but were wearing gloves.

“The employees did not wash their hands, but they did put on gloves,” Sommers said.

Inspectors also found three coolers not keeping food cold enough. Tuna was at 52 degrees. Chicken was cold held at 49 degrees and deli meat was held at 51 degrees.

Sommers says those coolers broke three times, but are now keeping food cold.

Inspectors also said nozzles on the soda dispenser appear to have mold growth and debris, which is a repeat violation.

The owner says the nozzles were probably just discolored, but have been replaced.

Inspectors also found mold growth inside the ice machine.

According to Sommers, it was a small corner on the outside and has been cleaned up.
