Summerfest Dining
Courtny Gerrish
MILWAUKEE - You go for the music, but eating at Summerfest is an art! So how do you know it's "clean dining?"
TODAY'S TMJ4 followed a health inspector around the Big Gig on opening day.
The food choices are endless. There are more than 70 food vendors serving up Summerfest dining, and every day of the Big Gig a Milwaukee health inspector checks out the kitchens.
"I think it's important to protect the consumer, protect the customer, that we keep checking in," says Julie Hults. She's constantly taking food temperatures and making sure everything is done by the book.
Martino's usually does things right. Known for its Chicago Dogs at Summerfest, owner T.J. Anderson is proud of the restaurant's waiver from the health department.
"We are the only restaurant in Milwaukee that has the legal right to serve ready to eat foods with our bare hands," says Anderson.
That took years of rigorous handwashing training.
Over at Water Street Brewery there is more than just beer on the menu! So, different kitchen but the same process for inspector Hults. Manager Nick Dillon says the daily checks are welcomed here.
"We already go through training classes but anything else we can learn from them, anything they can help us with to make sure the food is safe for our guests," Dillon said.
