Call 4 Action: Car Repair Tips

  • Print

Are you planning to take you car in for repair?

Before you do, you may want to do your homework to be sure that you are getting the best service, from a qualified mechanic, at a fair price.

With all of the talk lately about recalls and repairs, now is a good time to check out the rules and your rights, and to learn how to find the best place to get your car repaired.

Before dropping off and leaving your car with a mechanic, it's a good idea to:

• Check the rules for repair of a vehicle that is covered under warranty or recall. Although you may be in a hurry to get the job done, you may be required to have the work completed by a dealership using genuine parts.

• Request an estimate for any repairs that are expected to cost you more than $50. Upon request, repair shops are required to provide this estimate and receive your approval before the work can begin.

• Consider using a certified mechanic that comes recommended by people you trust.

• If the cost of the repair is expensive or seems suspicious, get a second opinion.

• Ask the repair shop to save your parts for you to inspect. Even if the parts are covered under warranty, the mechanic must show you the damaged parts upon request.

If you run into a problem with a car repair, ask to speak with a manager. If the situation is not resolved to your complete satisfaction, you might also be able to get help from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation or consumer organizations such as our Call 4 Action office.
