Avoiding Black Friday Blues

  • Print

Are you planning to hit the stores for some Black Friday shopping?

There are some tips that you can use to get the best deals and avoid falling victim to Black Friday blues.

Other than getting there early, make sure that you read sales flyers thoroughly.  Note time limits for the deals, a lot of sales are only for a few hours in the morning.

Compare deals with other stores, and with offers online.  Also make sure to bring along sales flyers, store coupons, and manufacturer coupons.

Some things to watch out for:
· Look-a-like merchandise that is strategically placed, but not on sale.
· Prices that reflect an after rebate cost.  Also, watch out for rebates that are for in-store credit only, or require multiple purchases.
· Pay attention to the register and report errors as soon as you notice them.
· Make sure that you are aware of your surroundings and that you are watching your purse and wallet.

Not only does this mean protecting yourself against theft, but also staying within your budget, no matter how good the deal may seem.

Also, watch out for credit card scams.  There are a number of scams going around whereby the scam artist e-mails or calls you to tell you that your card has been compromised, and then asks you to provide passwords, credit card numbers, or other personal information.

When in doubt, call the number on the back of your credit card to verify if the call or e-mail is legitimate.
