What to Do About a Lost Wallet

MILWAUKEE - What would you do if you lost your wallet? Lets hope you never have to find out. But, if you do, there are a few things that you can do to ease the burden of replacing what you lost, and protect yourself from falling victim to identity theft and other types of fraud.

As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure.

If you take some time to go through your wallet, taking note of what you have, and removing what you do not need, you can save yourself a big headache later. If you carry credit or insurance cards, or other important information, it might be a good idea to make a copy of everything in your wallet and keep this in a safe location. That way, if your wallet is lost or stolen, you will have a record of everything you had in it.

It is also a good idea to keep a record of not only what cards you had, but the i d numbers and phone numbers of where to call for a replacement.

If your wallet is stolen, contact police to file a report. If you carried credit, insurance, or social security cards, or had other ID cards, contact those places right away to cancel your card or alert them that you may be at risk for fraud. You might also want to alert credit bureaus of this, and make sure to check your credit report frequently, and be diligent about looking over bank, insurance, and credit card statements to be sure that your cards or identity are not being used fraudulently.

You may also want to contact your homeowner's insurance agent. You may have coverage for some of the loss of gift cards. Also, if you have a copy of the gift card with numbers listed on it, some companies can cancel the old card and issue a new one.
