Call 4 Action: Finding Low Cost Health Care Coverage
MILWAUKEE - Are you in need of affordable health care coverage but are having a hard time finding it?
This seems like it could be a real challenge for people, especially now that Badgercare is not accepting applications.
Where do people turn for help?
There are a few options, but they may not be the ulitimate solution for everyone.
• If you had group coverage and lost your job in the past 13 months, you may be able to continue COBRA coverage with a temporary subsidy to cover up to 65% of the premium for nine months.
• If you have, or are looking for, individual coverage, you may be able to lower your premiums by selecting higher deductibles and co-payments.
• You may want to check into short term medical plans. The premiums for short term medical plans are often far less expensive than an individual plan.
However, coverage under these plans usually expire within six months, and, they will not cover any pre-existing conditions.
What do you do if you have health issues that prevent you from getting coverage?
You can apply for the Wisconsin Health Insurance risk sharing plan, but you need to provide a letter from an insurer who has denied coverage.
Although these plans can be pricy and may exclude pre-existing conditions for up to six months, they do offer premium discounts for those with low income.
What do you do if you have checked into these options, but still cannot afford the cost?
If you don't have coverage and are in dire need of medical attention, contact your health department and ask about programs that provide low cost or free healthcare in your area, but keep in mind that these services may be limited.
If you need hospital care, explain your situation up front and ask if they can provide any discounts or charity assistance, and also ask about programs that provide help with prescription drugs.
