Call 4 Action: Think Before You Buy

By Jay Sorgi

MILWAUKEE - Are you getting the itch to make a major purchase?

Before you buy, you might want to think about more than just price and features.

Other than price and features, what else do we need to know before we buy?

Before you buy a car, house, or even a major appliance, it's a good idea to:
• Check your credit report, especially if you plan to finance your purchase. Low credit scores or errors could keep you from borrowing the money you need to make the purchase.
• Ask about the cost to insure the purchase - whether it be with an insurance policy or extended warranty.
• Think about how much it is going to cost to be the owner.

You might have enough to buy, but make sure that you will also have enough to pay for repairs and maintenance, especially if you face an economic hardship.

What can you do if you have been turned down for a loan?

Most importantly, find out why.
• If its due to an error or something you did not know about, act quickly to resolve these issuses with the creditor and credit reporting bureaus, and keep documentation to prove that things have been cleaned up.
•  If you are turned down due to a low credit score, ask your lender about what you can do to raise your score.

Sometimes, you can increase your credit score by paying your bills early, paying down high balances, or making a small purchase with a credit card and then paying this balance in full when you get the bill.

Any suggestions of what to do if you buy, but develop buyer's remorse?

This can be tough, and something you should plan for.

Before you buy, ask about return policies, penalties for cancelling the deal, and how you will deal with the consequences that you may face if you have to unload the purchase later.
