Have you or someone you know been turned down for disability benefits under SSI or Social Security?

Don't give up. There may be some things that you can do to reverse this decision.

If you get turned down for SSI or disability benefits with social security, what should you do?

Do not give up thinking that you will not qualify.

Nearly two-thirds of all claims are turned down the first time.

Instead, read the determination carefully to learn why you were turned down and then file an appeal within 60 days.

Why might someone be turned down and what should they do to speed up the appeal this decision?

Sometimes, the disability is not considered to be severe enough, or if it is an SSI case,

Income or assets may be too high.

However sometimes, benefits are denied because the claims examiner did not have enough information to determine the extent of the disability and how it might interfere with the person's ability to perform meaningful work.

When appealing for a reconsideration,

• Make sure to fully describe all aspects of your disability and why it interferes with your ability to work. Do not just assume that the examiner will have all of your records or will know everything about your disability.

• It may be a good idea to not only include new information and records, but also copies of everything used to substantiate your disability in your initial claim.

• It might also be a good idea to have an advocate or an attorney who specializes in disability cases assist you with your claim.

Yes. In fact, this is where a lot of people give up when they shouldn't.
