Unfinished Improvements

If you hired a contractor and the work isn’t done, or at least not to your satisfaction, now may be the time to take action. As cold weather sets in, some contractors may claim that nothing can be done until the weather warms up again. While this may be true, now is the time to take precautions to assure that you won’t be left out in the cold later. Before you allow contractors to dismiss themselves for the winter season,
• Document all work that needs to be done, and get a written agreement signed by you and the contractor as to what will be done , when, and at what cost.
• Take precautions to protect your property as best as possible while waiting for the work to be completed.
• Do not pay in full until all work has been completed to your complete satisfaction.
• Make sure that you have the full name of the contractor and the business, a street address and phone number.
If you were promised that a job would be done by now and there is not a reasonable excuse, don’t wait. Give your contractor a warning that you plan to take action by a particular date, and then follow through with consumer protection agencies or an attorney. The longer you wait, the less chances you may have for getting resolution.
