Dealing With School Problems
Karen Stiles
Now that a new school year is well underway, and most of the first day jitters have passed, most kids are on their way to a having a great year. However, sometimes there are a few challenges that can leave kids and parents wondering what to do. If you or your child are concerned about a school related issue, here is what you can do.
• First, document the concern and set up a meeting with your child’s teacher to discuss the issue at a time that is convenient for both of you. Be sure to provide specific examples of your concern and how you would like the issue resolved.
• If your child’s teacher cannot resolve the issue, ask for a help from an appropriate staff member such as, the school principal, psychologist, or guidance counselor.
• You might also be able to get help from the district’s administration office, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, non-profit organizations such as the PTA or Parent Education Project, or from websites such as www.greatschools.net
Although many concerns can be resolved without having to go through multiple channels, it’s a good idea to keep a written record of what happened, when, and what resolution was being offered.
