Healthcare Resources
Karen Stiles
When you or a loved one is stricken with a serious illness, you might ask, “What is the prognosis? How can I find out more about this disease? How do I know where to go to get the best care? How will I ever be able to pay the costs for treating this illness? Well fortunately, there are a number of great resources. One of the best places to start is via the website for the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services (http://dhs.wisconsin.gov/guide/about.htm), and click on the link for the Consumer Guide to Healthcare. This guide contains a lot of good information and links to other websites that can provide resources for paying for healthcare, getting help with insurance issues, and how to locate patient advocates who can provide further assistance.
In addition, you may want to
• Search for organizations that are dedicated to helping people with a specific illness.
• Ask if your hospital has a medical library where you can research your illness further.
• Ask your healthcare provider or insurer if they can provide you with someone who can assist you in managing issues related to your illness such as, finding the best professionals to help you deal with your illness, finding alternative options for treatment, and how to negotiate some of costs with providers.
