Protect yourself from fraud
MILWAUKEE - Are you doing all that you can to protect yourself from falling victim to fraud?
Although many of us do a good job of staying alert and taking protective measures, sometimes we need a few reminders.
Any one of us could become a victim of fraud at any time, but there are a few things that you can do to lessen the chances of it happening to you.
Most important, protect your personal information. Criminals have gotten very good at tricking people into releasing this information by phone, e-mail, or on websites.
Before you release any information, ask questions, check things out with consumer agencies or other legitimate sources, and steer clear of criminals who use intimidation, high pressure, or other tactics that pull at your heartstrings or lead you to believe that you have won something.
Use caution when accessing e-mail or websites.
Update virus protection and anti-spyware on a consistent basis.
Be careful before clicking on links or opening attachments.
Pay attention to signs that you are on a phony website, such as blurry images, odd layouts, or spelling and grammatical errors.
Check bank and credit card statements, as well as your credit report on a regular basis so that you can spot a problem before it gets out of hand.
If something seems suspicious or if you believe that you are a victim of fraud, report it immediately.
