Dealing with a bad deal

MILWAUKEE - Did you get stuck with a bad deal during Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

There may be something you can do about it.

What are some of the problems that consumers ran into these past few days?

There were some good deals, but some consumers were not happy about misleading ads, wrong prices ringing up at the registers, and websites that crashed before an order could be completed.

What can you do if you feel that you got a bad deal or no deal?

Check over your receipts and order confirmations and compare what you were charged with what was advertised.

If you believe that you were overcharged, speak up and ask for a refund or price adjustment.

If a merchant will not honor the request, you might want to consider returning the item or, if you paid with a credit card, file a dispute for the charge when it appears on the next statement.

If you tried to take advantage of an online special, but the website crashed before you could seal the deal, contact the merchant as soon as possible, explain what happened, and ask if they are willing to make an exception and extend a sale or special offer.

What should people be watching out for over the next few weeks if they plan to shop?

Know who you are dealing with before you buy.

Buy from reputable businesses or well known websites.

Watch the fine print in ads and prices charged at the register.

Check your bank and credit card statements to be sure that the correct amount is being debited or charged.

Also, when possible, open the package or check out the quality of the item before you leave the store, to be sure that the item is genuine and not damaged or missing parts.

Once you leave the store, it can be hard to prove that you did not get what you paid for.

Follow the golden rule: If it looks to good to be true, it probably is.
