Career opportunities that come with a cost
MILWAUKEE - In the past few months, we have heard from a number of consumers who thought they were signing up for a promising career that would provide them with a good income.
But, when things did not work out, they found that they were out money that they paid up front for training or supplies, or, in some cases, they were required to pay back money that was advanced for advertising and other expenses.
What can people do to avoid having something like this happen?
Before you pay money or sign a contract, think about what you are getting into, and ask yourself
- "How well do i know this company or career that they are offering?"
- "How many people actually succeed in this business?"
- "What happens financially if i decide that this career is not for me?"
How can you check things out before you sign up?
Do not just trust what the company is telling you. Do your own research.
Do an online search using the name of the company or career opportunity and words like "problem" or "complaints."
Talk to others who are working in this type of career and ask questions about the company's reputation and what it takes to be successful.
Contact consumer agencies to see if they have had any complaints or have more information.
Most importantly, trust your gut instinct. If something does not feel right, do not pay any money or sign any contracts.
