Get an inspection report when moving in our out
MILWAUKEE - If you are one of the many who will be moving in our out of an apartment this weekend, listen up.
There are a few things that you will want to do to avoid a hassle later.
What is the most important thing that people should do during the move?
Make sure to do a thorough, well documented, move in and move out inspection, and keep a copy of this for the future.
The inspection report is critical for documenting damage, getting necessary repairs made, and assuring that you do not get penalized for damage that you did not cause.
What kinds of things should be noted when you move in?
Document any damage or markings on carpeting, walls, cabinets, doors, or fixtures.
Make sure appliances are functioning properly, and that there are no plumbing or electrical problems.
Check that all window and door locks are working properly and ask if the locks were or can be changed.
If you are moving out, what can you do to avoid being penalized?
Use the same inspection form that was used when you moved in, and make sure that you are leaving the apartment in the same or better condition than when you moved in.
If you need to make repairs, make sure to take pictures, and keep copies of receipts to prove that cleaning, painting, and repairs were made.
As you vacate, do a final walk through with the landlord or management and ask for a signed copy of a moveout inspection form, before you hand over the keys.
