Control the true cost to rent a car
MILWAUKEE - If you plan on renting a car anytime soon, listen up.
If you are not careful, you could end paying a lot more than what you expected.
The next time you rent a car, pay attention, ask questions, and do a thorough inspection of the vehicle and the contract before you leave the lot.
There are a number of hidden fees and circumstances that could end up costing you big bucks if you are not careful.
To keep these costs under control, here is what you need to ask:
1) "Is there a penalty or fee for returning the car too early and how much will I be charged if the vehicle is returned late?"
Some rental car companies charge a fee if you return more than 24 hours in advance, but some will also offer a grace period if the vehicle is returned late.
2) "How much will I be charged for gas if I do not fill the tank before I return the car?"
Watch out. This cost could be double or triple of the price per gallon at a local gas station.
3) "How will you document the dings, scratches or other damage that might already exist on the vehicle and what happens if damage occurs while I am renting the car? Will you bill my insurance carrier?"
When returning the car, make sure to check over your bill and condition report to be sure that everything is accurate.
If you find errors or disagree with what is being charged, ask for corrections to be made.
If you are unable to resolve the issue, ask for a manager, or contest the charge with the corporate office or your credit card company.
