Identity Theft During Tax Season

Karen Stiles

Your identity can be stolen at any time. But, consumers need to be more cautious, especially during tax season, with how and to whom they release their information. This is the one time of the year when social security numbers, banking, and other personal information is pulled out in the open, and, if your not careful, it could fall into the wrong hands. To protect yourself from being victim of identity theft, use caution on how you make your information available.
• Consider using a locked mailbox, storing your information in a locked safe, and using secure passwords that are changed frequently for information that is stored on a computer or online.
• Before releasing your personal information, be sure that you know who you are dealing with, how they will use your information, and how it will be safeguarded.
• When disclosing information, be discreet, and take into account who might be listening or able to intercept your personal information. If it is not a private setting, write the information down verses saying it out loud.
This is also a good time to order a free copy of your credit report, and, to pay extra attention to bank, medical, and other statements. If you notice any discrepancies or unusual activity, take action immediately.
