Call 4 Action
Identity theft via cell phone
MILWAUKEE - Most of us have gotten pretty good at taking measures to protect ourselves from falling victim to identity theft.
Have you thought about how your cell phone could be putting you at risk?
Cell phones are being used for much more than conversation.
People are using them to pay for purchases, perform online banking and shopping, and to store personal information.
Although this can be convenient, it is especially important to take measures to protect this information just in case your phone is lost, stolen, or hacked into.
If you want to avoid falling victim to identity theft, here is what you can do to protect the information that you may be storing or sharing via your cell phone:
• Contact your cell phone carrier or the manufacturer and ask about features or apps that can be activated to block your personal information from being accessed by someone else.
• Think twice before opening messages or clicking on links in a message from someone that you do not know.
• If your phone is lost or stolen, contact your carrier immediately so that measures can be taken to cut off service, locate your phone, or to take other measures to protect your information.
