Checking out products seen in infomercials
MILWAUKEE - Did you ever see an item advertised on an infomercial that seemed so good that you just had to have it now?
Before you dial the number or head to their website to place your order, here is what you can do to lessen your chances of getting taken:
• Although the company's testimonials can seem impressive, look for testimonials or complaints on your own from blogs, complaint boards, or better yet, consumer agencies and resources like the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Do not simply trust what you see or hear in the infomercial or company's website.
• Before placing your order, thoroughly check out the terms and conditions, look for a street address for the company, and ask questions about return policies.
If anything seems vague or missing, watch out.
• Be particularly careful with promises of "satisfaction guaranteed" or "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back".
Regardless of the promise, you could be out money spent for shipping and handling, as well as money spent on the product, especially if the promise is only for satisfaction guaranteed.
This could simply mean a replacement product will be offered.
If you decide to purchase the product, use a major credit card.
If the company does not live up to its promise, you may be able to dispute the charge with your card issuer.
