MILWAUKEE- The race has already been dubbed "Tommy versus Tammy," and both candidates hit the campaign trail hard Wednesday.
Former Governor Tommy Thompson and current Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin are skilled politicians with a long history of public service in Wisconsin.
Both served in the Wisconsin State Assembly and have law degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
But they are polar opposites on the political spectrum.
"Do you want more government control or less government control," asked Thompson at a campaign stop in Waukesha.
Thompson was elected to an unprecedented four terms as Governor -- winning 60 percent or more of the statewide vote twice.
The Elroy Republican also served in President Bush's cabinet as the Health and Human Services Secretary.
"If you believe you want more independence, more control over your health care system, then you should vote for me," said Thompson.
"I'm fighting for the people of this state," said Baldwin at a campaign stop in Milwaukee.
Baldwin is the first female from Wisconsin elected to Congress.
The Madison Democrat has been reelected seven times with more than 60 percent of the vote in multiple contests. This is her first ever statewide campaign.
"We are losing folks from our middle class," said Baldwin. "We need to grow our middle classes, the backbone of not only our nation, but our economy."
Both candidates believe Janesville Representative Paul Ryan on the national ticket will help their campaign, but for opposite reasons that fall along party lines.
