I don't think it's what they meant by "giving."
I saw it as a teaching moment.
Young Ella had been talking about May Day at school. It was suggested the kids embrace the spirit of giving, perhaps by giving some flowers to mom, or something to that effect.
I thought it was really smart of dad to use that "spirit of giving" thing when Ella refused to share her Teddy Grahams with sister Olivia.
DAD: You had a chance to do what you talked about at school, and give to your sister. You could have shared your snake with Olivia, and you didn't. That's disappointing.
ELLA: Yeah, but dad... it's about giving, and nobody gave me anything!
DAD: Ahh.... well.... yep.
Turned out it was a teaching moment, and I learned a lot.
