FAITH IN YOUTH RESTORED

HELPING AN OLD FRIEND HELPED ME

  • Print

It was a pleasure to help judge applications for the Willie D. Davis Scholarship Fund.

Even if I didn't think it was a worthwhile cause, I'd have had to do it for my old friend Chandra Staples. A friend from high school, Chandra is one of the most positive and energetic people I've known. Impossible to say no to her.

But I wouldn't have said no anyway. Chandra asked me to join a group down at 1290 WMCS last night. We reduced a pool of nearly 200 applicants to dozens of finalists. The fund bears the name of former Green Bay Packer and current radio group owner Willie Davis. This year, it will award 25, $2000 scholarships. More information available on the link below.

Chandra thanked us for helping, but truly it's one of these deals where I feel I benefited as much. There were a lot of excellent submissions. It's amazing to see all the activities young people are involved in now. In many cases despite being in multiple things in and outside of school, these students are keeping up near perfect GPA's.

We've talked a great deal on T.V. lately about violence in the schools, sexting among teens, bullying, drinking and drug abuse. Sure was nice to see there are plenty of young people out there doing it right... excelling in their schools and aspiring to higher education.

Good luck to all of them, and thank you, Chandra.
