Not that he needs free advice, but it seems like he does need better advice. Here's what I tell Tiger if I'm his PR man.
Yes, Tiger. You are, as everyone is, entitled to a private life. You do not owe anyone a public apology or explanation of your actions. That is true.
Now... you remember you're one of the most famous people on planet earth, right? Get over it and get ready to tell what happened.
Like I said, Tiger certainly does not have to explain himself to the public, but he has to say more than he has if he wants to get beyond this. Look, the public will forgive almost anyone, almost anything, almost every time... as long as you can still do what made you famous. Long as Tiger can still win golf tournaments, this will pass.
One final time I state Tiger doesn't need to talk. I do think he should, and I'm basing that on a few assumptions.
I assume Tiger wants eventually to come out of hiding. I assume Tiger doesn't want to continue canceling appearances in golf tournaments. I assume Tiger does not want to hear questions about this at the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British, the PGA or any other golf tournaments. I assume he wants to continue getting paid millions to endorse products.
Assuming that... I advise him to do one interview. Now. Pick your person... whomever you think will give you the most sympathetic shake. I'd tell him to to avoid ESPN and think bigger... major network stuff. Maybe Barbara Walters... maybe Matt Lauer... maybe Oprah... but you do it. You tell all. Then you can say that's all you've got to say. It will then blow over in time... but not until.
