MAYOR BARRETT IS NOT, NOT RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett danced the dance with us on Live at Daybreak.
As a news guy for 14 years, I've danced this dance a great many times with a great many people. I'm about to interview someone to whom I must pose a question I know he/she is not going to answer.
That was the fun on Live at Daybreak with Mayor Barrett. He was at the annual cutting down of the City/County Christmas tree. Let's be honest, unless the thing broke in half like last year it wasn't going to be real exciting. So the Mayor gets a mic on and does the obligatory live interview with Susan and Me.
We didn't expect the man to just say, "Sure, okay. I'll announce right here, right now that I'm running for governor." Knew he wasn't going to answer it... but had to ask him. If you don't ask him... people wonder, "Why didn't you ask him if he was running for governor."
He knew we weren't really that interested in the tree either. I mean, he had to know we were going to ask him too. That's why it's a dance.
There was a newsworthy nugget to extract from the interview, I thought. The Mayor wanted to make it clear that the delay in an announcement isn't a matter of indecision. He doesn't want people to think he's going Brett Favre and hemming and hawing. He just has a process of evaluation that he wants to go through, and he's not all the way through it yet.
Anyway... of all the times I've danced this dance, I give the Mayor credit. He was a lovely dance partner.
