THE DAY CABLE TV DIED IN MY HOUSE
NEW STATION REVIVES MEMORIES
There's a new T.V. station on the air in Milwaukee bringing you music videos for free.
New station is at 4.3 on your digital over the air television. Right now it's not on cable or satellite, but that could change. First the explanation... then the story behind the station... and then the story behind the story.
When we went to digital television (remember all that business with the "conversion:") it opened up a whole bunch of new possibilities. Through something called multi-casting, Today's TMJ4 now has three stations all running out of this building. 4.1 is our main programming. 4.2 is our all weather channel. New today, 4.3 is something called The Cool T.V.
Our radio station, 94.5 Lake FM is behind it. It's a music video station that's running everything from the oldest videos to contemporary stuff. Just today I've seen all kinds of things. We had it on in the newsroom. Tears for Fears and Tina Turner... just the kind of variety people are raving about on the radio station. Not only that... but there are no garbage reality shows. This music video station actually plays music videos. We've had a blast watching it.
When I was a kid, we had MTV... until we didn't, and that was my brother's fault.
In an odd departure from how my family usually did things, we had cable T.V. fairly early on. We were usually the last ones on the block to get anything new. I think I was in high school before we had a microwave. Seriously.
So my brother and I were probably 4 and 8 years old respectively. We watched all kinds of garbage on cable. That all ended one night when my mom went to tuck Nick in. She leaned over to kiss him good night, and Nick opens his mouth. He then proceeds to make some obnoxious motion with his mouth and tongue. My poor, shocked mother asked where he had learned that. Nick said, "That's how people kiss on T.V."
And that was it. No more cable. No HBO, no Cinemax, and certainly no MTV. Parents pulled the plug. It's just one of many things my brother ruined for the rest of us.
So I'm thrilled this new station is on the air. Now I can watch all those glorious old videos that missed all those years ago.
