DON'T DO THAT!
MILLER ADS TOO FUNNY TO PULL
Miller bowed to pressure from my people and will pull hilarious ads featuring Phil Leotardo.
Apparently an Italian American group got a little oversensitive about some Miller Lite ads and somehow had enough juice to get them pulled off the air. As a guy whose name ends in a vowel, all I can do is apologize to the rest of you who, like me, probably thought they were pretty funny. Can I also add I'm glad that group doesn't have other things to worry about.
Here's a link the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article on the controversy... but if you've watched a Brewer game in the last month, you know what ads I'm talking about. You've got a couple of mob looking dudes (one of them, actor Frank Vincent who had a major role in HBO's hit series The Sopranos) who offer beer seller guy "protection."
The take-away line is the reaction to alleged disrespect, which in the circles of my people is, "Ohhhhh!"
I thought they were the best Miller Lite ads in a while, and can't say I was remotely offended. I'm not 100% or anything. In fact, I'm as much Polish as I am Italian... 25%. But really.
Here's the mantra by which I live my life: Funny trumps wrong 98% of the time.
Every once in a while, there are some topics or taboos that are in such poor taste they are and ought to be off limits... even if they're funny. I put that in the 2% category. Every thing else is worth laughing at.
Now where people most often violate this rule is they say offensive or imprudent things that aren't actually funny! No cover for you then. If people aren't laughing, they're less likely to suspend negative feelings about your crack. But funny is funny.
There are way worse commercials out there for my money. An Italian food chain restaurant has gone out of its way to depict Italian Americans as a bunch of loud, story tellin', pasta eatin' fools who couldn't tell the difference between a chain restaurant in American and a bistro in Rome. Gimme a break.
So anyway, my response to Miller pulling those hilarious ads... OHHHH!
