CAR SEAT LIFE SAVER
KID SURVIVES TRAIN CRASH
It's beyond any federal safety standard for a car seat to remain effective when the vehicle is hit by a TRAIN!
When I saw the video from inside the van, I was not surprised to see what appears to be a Britax car seat. I'm going to go all nerdy dad on you for a moment and tell you two things I've learned about child safety seats.
First, the car seat that survived the train crash and left the child unharmed is one of the best on the market. I believe it's a Britax. They're quite expensive. I know. I actually have 4 of them. Nothing like buying something for 300 dollars that's also available for 70 dollars. But when you see a child strapped into one of those seats survived a collision with a train, it ought to leave no further questions about the quality of the Britax.
I can also personally attest to their effectiveness. I was in an accident in our mini-van... all three kids... all in Britax... and they didn't even feel it. So if you have the means, I'd recommend them.
Secondly... the effectiveness of even the best car seats is compromised if they're not installed or used correctly.
My friends at Children's Hospital and SafeKids Southeast Wisconsin reminded me this morning, 90 percent of child safety seats they see are not installed correctly. 90 percent!
Here's a link to more information. Everything you need to know about child safety seats. It's a great idea to visit one of the check-ups this summer, or make an appointment to have your seats checked. I'll see you there.
