Vince Vitrano: Not For Broadcast

WOULD WE HAVE DONE THAT?

NO NAKED PICS WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL

Would we have had the same problems of today's teens if we'd had the same technology?

The recent stories involving high schoolers emailing/texting naked pictures of themselves dropped a lot of jaws across Southeast Wisconsin. Surely you've had a conversation, maybe with your teenagers, about this seemingly widespread phenomenon.

I don't know how it was for you, but there weren't any nudie pics floating around my high school... well... not that weren't in magazines. We had a naturally occurring deterrent. If we had been so inclined to shoot pictures of our privates, we'd have had to do it on our parents' cameras and then take 'em over to Walgreens to have them developed. Yeah right.

Today... everyone has a phone, and anyone with a phone has a camera. Pictures are there instantly; no one has to process them.

It's easy to point at younger generations and note how foolish they appear. Every generation has thought that of the others. Still, in this case I wonder if we had better morals and better judgment, or if we simply had inferior technology.

I'd like to think we were smarter. I'm not convinced that's it. I do think we were more modest. I'm not saying guys and girls didn't get mixed up in some things that would have made their parents cringe. I am saying they took better care to keep it to themselves.

That said, I'm glad I didn't have some of these technological tools. Friendships, relationships, and all the social stresses of teenage life were hard enough.

I'd love to post some of your thoughts on this. Email me: vvitrano@todaystmj4.com
