OKAY, I DID IT
Since he was arrested, Michael McGee has proclaimed his innocence and blamed everyone for his demise, except himself... until he faced a decade and a half in prison at his sentencing.
For months he said he didn't do it. The former Milwaukee Alderman, now Felon, was convicted of shaking down business owners for cash that he spent on who knows what. He used intimidation and thuggery (his word... called himself "Thug Mike") to force his own constituents to pony up cash whenever he felt like it.
For months he said he didn't do it.
But that's not all he said. He questioned the process, the police, the prosecutors, the entire judicial system. Called them racist. Said he was being railroaded. Spoke to those who were all too willing to believe it. Didn't care that he further damaged the efforts to build trust in the community with the police and other authorities.
Finally, then, when he faced the judge on his sentencing... finally when he could no longer escape the consequences of his actions... finally when there were no more excuses... finally... he broke down and said he was sorry. Could have gotten 15 years. Got 6 1/2. That performance alone probably saved McGee at least 5 years... maybe more.
Pardon me if I remain skeptical.
