WHO COULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING?
EXCEPT... WELL... EVERYONE
Catching bad guys is hard, so it's baffling to me how easily we sometimes let them go.
There's a story in the news today about a convicted felon who "escaped" from a work release job down in Pleasant Prairie. Now there's a dangerous criminal on the loose, and you can't say any intelligent person couldn't see this coming.
Nicholas Sabala walked off the job yesterday morning. He was doing time for shooting his friend in the stomach during a fight and then leaving him for dead. Sabala then eluded police for 4 months. Finally captured, Sabala was charged with attempted murder, but pleaded out to a lesser offense.
So for reasons yet unexplained, this dangerous man who almost killed a guy and then ran from the law for months, for reasons yet unexplained, someone decided this guy was a good candidate for work release duty?
Look, I'm all for giving inmates something constructive to do. Let 'em earn their keep or pay restitution. But some guys are candidates for minimum security facilities with limited supervision, and some guys aren't. I would say if you tried to kill someone by shooting him in the gut, then ran from police for 4 months... you're not really a candidate for anything, other than doing hard time.
