Vince Vitrano: Not For Broadcast

SEVERE WEATHER IS COOL

UNTIL IT'S IN YOUR BASEMENT

  • Print

Like so many of us in Wisconsin, I find the weather fascinating... just less so when I have to clean it up.

My mulch was floating away! Not that it's a big deal, but just an illustration of how much rain we got in the Dale.

When I was kid, I remember a big storm in July that flooded the usual spots in Wauwatosa. We were coming back from up north, and I thought it was the coolest thing. As we drove down North Avenue, coming up on the Menomonee River, flooding was evident. Roads were washed out, fields under water. I remember the soccer goals with water half-way up.

I now know as I was yelling, "Cool!" my parents must have been sick. All they could think about the few more blocks to home... what does the basement look like.

Yes, this is one of the many things you learn to appreciate about your parents later in life. Storms aren't so much fun when you're worried about protecting your home and belongings.

Now I know what it's like to pray the sump-pump doesn't go out. I know what it's like to worry about your stuff floating away. I know what it's like to be thankful for a shop-vac. I think I sucked up more than 30 gallons of water, and I'm certain there's more waiting for me when I get home.

I feel for those who got it much worse. Good luck bailing out. I hope we dry out soon.

You know what has to be next... extended dry period. I'll probably be watering my lawn by next week.

Send me your stories and pictures and I'll post them here.  Picture above from Brian Behling who sent it in. Thanks.
