Vince Vitrano: Not For Broadcast

NOW THAT'S A MAN

GALLARDO PITCHES THROUGH PAIN

  • Print

What Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo did yesterday should have served as an example to the whole team, especially one player in particular.

So Yo gets tangled up in a play at first base yesterday in that dog fight down at Wrigley Field. The replay is the kind that makes anybody cringe. Dude's knee and leg bent in all sorts of unnatural directions. If a football player left the field in a cart after a twister like that, I wouldn't blame him.

Instead... Gallardo literally limps back out to the mound to finish that inning, and even go another.

Yeah!

It's about time we see that kind of fire, passion, and commitment from somebody like that. He was not coming out.

It mattered to him what was on the line. It mattered to him that he was pitching in a tight game. It mattered to him that he was paid to do a job, and was going to go out there and do it. It mattered, and so he fought to stay in.

What sharp contrast to another pitcher on our roster who seems to run to the dugout whenever something starts "bothering" him.

Here's the conversation I hope was had in the Brewer dugout yesterday as Yo is out there battling.

Ned Yost: Wow. I mean... I didn't think he'd even get up... much less go back out there and pitch.

Ben Sheets: Are you talking to me, skip?

Yost: No. I mean, I'm just saying... that guy is battling.

Ben Sheets: Yeah.

Yost: That's toughness man. Tough. I used to play with a lot of guys like that.

Ben Sheets: Oh yeah?

Yost: Yeah. Guys would get banged up... dust off... go back out there and do their jobs.

Ben Sheets: Yeah.

Yost: Yeah, I mean, I was telling Yo to come on out... but he wouldn't come. Said he was good. I mean... that's what I'm talking about.

Ben Sheets: Yeah.
