LOCAL COMPANY LEADS THE WAY
GIVES STUDENTS A BOOST, TAXPAYERS A BREAK
Every community wants strong public schools, but in these tight times taxpayers have little appetite for throwing more money at local districts.
It's why what GE Healthcare did today is so special, and a model for other businesses and citizens.
The company, headquartered here in Metro-Milwaukee, farmed out half of its workforce to a huge community service project today. 3000 GE Healthcare employees will spend their work day at 19 MPS schools. They'll do some fixing, some fixing up, painting and cleaning and the like.
Referenda are being defeated all over the State. Local schools districts say they're tapped. The taxpayers answer, "So are we." That leaves little room for little things, but little things matter.
So huge props to GE for being a great community partner, and leading the way. This is how improvements in our schools may have to happen. You can't keep going to the same taxpayer well... it's time to start thinking out of the box. Developing business and community partnerships is one way.
