ONLY IN MILWAUKEE
SAUSAGE RELAY WAS AWESOME
Only in Milwaukee can a giant hot dog under police escort and trailed by a news chopper run down the street and not get a second glance from a passer by.
My favorite moment from yesterday's opening day hoopla (and by hoopla I mean anything that's not actually the game) was the sausage relay from the Klement's plant on Milwaukee's South Side all the way to Miller Park.
Chopper4 with Power Zoom picked up the relay at about 30th and National. Here's Hot Dog running down the street, with a Harley Cop escorting him down National Avenue. If you watch the video closely, on the right hand side you'll see a guy enter the picture on the sidewalk. This is the great part, dude doesn't even look twice!
The guy's just walking along, minding his own business, and is passed by a 9 foot Hot Dog running down the street with cops and helicopter in tow, and he doesn't even look off to check it out. "Hmmm, there's hot dog... so anyway as I was saying..."
Sometimes I just love this town, and opening day is one of those times. Only in Milwaukee can a giant sausage running in the streets be considered so un-interesting as to not even turn one's head for a second look.
Incidentally, the Italian continues where he left off last year. He wins on opening day. I'm just saying...
Thanks to my buddy at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jeff Phelps for the photos of the opening day race. Mark Was the photographer from Today's TMJ4 up in the chopper with the Sausage Relay.
