IT'S ONION HEADLINE DAY IN MILWAUKEE
There are days when the news in our town reads more like THE ONION than the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL.
This day, on an annual basis, is one of those. It’s the day when the Mayor of the now 28th largest city in the Nation (we were top 20 a decade ago) has to hold a news conference essentially reminding people of the following:
HEY! You see all that trash all over your yard and neighborhood? Yeah… you! That’s your trash. You need to clean that up.
Mayor Tom Barrett is holding his annual KGMB (an acronym that rolls right off the tongue… Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful) news conference to promote neighborhood clean ups and even to offer to pay for supplies to help. Here’s a line from the actual new release:
“Any information we can give residents is an opportunity to keep neighborhoods clean and safe – and an opportunity to avoid expensive citations. ”
Another way to say that is… I can’t believe I have to hold a news conference to remind residents of common decency and good citizenship, but since I have to how ‘bout this. Clean that junk up out of your yards before the rats do, and we end up with an epidemic of plague flooding the ER!
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not crackin’ the Mayor for doing it. Unfortunately he needs to. C’mon Milwaukee! Let’s be better than this.
