"WE WILL RETALIATE"
RECALLING VP GORE'S COMMENTS IN MY INTERVIEW
It's almost chilling listening to the words of then Vice President Al Gore talking about "who is responsible" for the bombing of the USS Cole. It was long before most of us heard the name Osama Bin Laden.
One of the most important interviews I've done in my career was 5 minutes with the Vice President of the United States of America. Al Gore was running for President at the time, fall of 2000. He was on a swing through Green Bay, Fond du Lac and Waukesha.
It was not long after the terrorist bombing of the USS Cole. A sailor from Fond du Lac was killed. I'd covered his funeral. A sailor from Southeast Wisconsin was injured. His face was still scabbed when I interviewed him on the steps of his Racine home.
If you click on the video, you'll hear me ask Vice President Gore about the bombing, and what the U.S. planned to do about it.
I hope the families of those sailors, and all those who mourn the victims in the September 11 attacks find some comfort in today's news. More than a decade later, the U.S. made good on the Vice President's promise.
