Vince Vitrano: Not For Broadcast

VITRANO... OUT

OLD MAN GIVES UP ON BREWERS WITH 161 GAMES TO GO

  • Print

True enough. The Milwaukee Brewers are 1 game below .500 and tied for last place in the National League Central Division. There are only 161 games to go!

As I've written before patience is something I believe more often dwindles than grows with age. I certainly don't find myself becoming more patient as the years go on.

So I guess it should come as no surprise that my father, Joe Vitrano, is less and less willing to "ride out the storm," with his favorite teams. What he has done this year, to further the analogy, is to cancel school for next week Wednesday, based on a prediction of snow in the previous Friday's forecast.

He calls me yesterday at about 6:10 PM:

VINNY: Hello?

DAD: I'm out!

VINNY: What?

DAD: Yeah... out!

VINNY: Out for what?

DAD: Baseball! Brewers... blow a 3 run lead in the 9th. Same crap. I'm out!

VINNY: You're aware it was the season opener?

DAD: What's the difference? Why hang on? Same problems as always. No closer. Done.

While such an early exit for any fan is without precedent, it was not without its warning signs. My father has given up on the Brewers earlier and earlier every year... calling off the season just 2 weeks in last year. But the season opener?

Granted. I labeled the Packers dead after week 6 this year, and we all know how that turned out. No one has ever accused the Vitrano boys of being great prognosticators. Good thing.

Please don't mistake my old man for a "fair weather fan" or a "bandwagoner." He'll still watch games. He'll still listen. He'll still go. He'll still support the team. He'll just believing we have a chance to make the playoffs. He'll also continue to hope they prove him wrong.

Turns out the Brewers are going to go ahead and play the rest of their games anyway... just in case. Join us Monday morning. Live at Daybreak is live at Miller Park for Opening Day 2011! Susan, and I will anchor the morning and Noon shows from the ballpark. Scott Steele is out there with us for your opening day forecast, and Jessie Garcia will be live too with sports. Hopefully the Crew is 2-1 at that point!
