For 5 years old, Ella is an excellent reader, but she's not excellente!
I seriously don't remember reading functionally until like, 3rd grade. I'm sure it was sooner, but when I look at my oldest, and how much she knows already it's amazing. Not even finished with 5K and she can fight through reading a lot of books with only limited help.
She's excited on Library days at school to trade in her book she's kept for a week and get a new one. I'm usually excited too, as reading the same book over and over again gets a bit old. I was less excited with the book she brought home this week.
As I watched her thumb through the book, I was surprised I didn't hear her sounding out any words. She usually gives it a crack before we read together. Hmmm...
Maybe it had to do with the fact that my kid brought home a book... written in Spanish! Umm, Ella, there's a reason you can't sound out any of these words. It's because this is not the language you speak.
Now, they are doing a good job with some Spanish basics. The kid can count to veinty, and knows a few of Dora's favorite words, but she's hardly reading books in Espanol.
For my part, with one loosely attended, second semester, senior year of college Spanish class to my credit, I was able to read out loud from portions of the book. I just wasn't able to tell her what any of it meant.
I'm looking even more forward to Library day next week.
