THIS ONE TIME... AT PACKER CAMP
MY FIRST "ON AIR" APPEARANCE AT TODAY'S TMJ4
It was the coolest job in the world, and it got even cooler when it got me on T.V.
As most of you die-hard Packer fans know, our team bases its annual training camp at St. Norbert College in De Pere, right outside Green Bay.
The camp provides a lot of jobs for students, including food service and van drivers. I dutifully performed both jobs in two glorious summers, 1993 and 1994.
I have enough stories from those two years of camp to fill a short book, but former TODAY'S TMJ4 Sports Director Dennis Krause did a pretty good job telling my story in a minute and a half.
August, 1993. I was driving vans that day. The players stay at St. Norbert. Some guys who just got to town, or frankly guys who aren't sure they're going to make the team, don't have their own cars up there. The College provides a shuttle service to and from practice at Lambeau Field, and that was one of my jobs.
On one particular afternoon, I bumped into Dennis Krause at Lambeau Field. Actually... being from Wauwatosa, having watched Channel 4 my whole life and having an interest in a television career, I kind of stalked him for a while. Then I went up and introduced myself.
At best, I hoped the guy wouldn't be too annoyed by me. As it turned out, I made his day! Dennis was looking for a story to tie into St. Norbert and training camp, and here's this kid from Wauwatosa tugging on his pants. It's what we call in the business, "one stop shopping." The whole story was right there.
Click on the video icon above to check it out, and enjoy a young Dennis Krause (who is still my hero) and a young Vinny... who took his job driving a van way too seriously.
