A Super Upset For The Ages
By Lance Allan Archived Content
Yeah, a small part of me wanted to see if the Patriots could finish off the pursuit of perfection. And I'm sure a number of you didn't want to see the Giants win, knowing what happened 2 weeks ago in Green Bay. But as the last few seconds clicked off in Glendale, wasn't it sweet to see the Giants finish off the biggest upset since....the Patriots beat the Rams in Super Bowl 36, and before that, sorry everyone...the Packers losing to the Broncos exactly 10 years earlier in San Diego at Super Bowl 32? For some of you beating the drum for perfection...I say who cares? It's far more memorable when Cinderella wins the last dance at the ball. This country is built on underdogs doing the impossible. Kirk Gibson's home run in the 1989 World Series. North Carolina State or Villanova for the NCAA championship. The Bad News Bears and Buttermaker, winning it all. That's what it's all about. Bill Belichick...or should I say Beli-cheat....showed his true colors. Running off the field with a second still to play. Can't you show any class and graciousness at any point? You're condescending little remarks at press conferences show what you're all about...so I guess it doesn't shock me that he shook hands with Tom Coughlin and got out of Dodge early. Same thing for Randy Moss. Great sportsmanship leaving the field early. Good to see you still carry the Vikings curse Randy....still no rings on your hand. Plus when the story came out about the Patriots taping the Rams walk through before their first Super Bowl win, I'm convinced where there's smoke, there's fire. As painful as it was for Packers fans to stomach losing in the NFC Championship Game, and then this...the Giants deserved this. Just the 2nd team ever (the 2005 Steelers the first) to win the Super Bowl after 3 road playoff games. The 3rd team to start the season 0-2, then win the title (1993 Cowboys, 2001 cheating Pats the others). And with 14 knockdowns and 23 pressures of Tom Brady, plus an 83 yard drive to end it...they showed heart and determination. Anyone that knows me knows I'm not a fan of New York teams...but Eli Manning grew up, Tom Coughlin improved his personality (you could learn from this Bill), Plaxico Burress manned up and caught the game winner despite a bad knee injury, and Michael Strahan brought it after contemplating retirement (Brett Favre take note, come back because it can be done). Cheaters never win...and don't finish off storybook perfect seasons. The Pats found that out....facing the Giants. Emails at lallan@todaystmj4.com

Congrats to the Coach! As Three Dog Night used to sing, one is the loneliest number. Mike McCarthy's out to change that tomorrow. On Saturday (tomorrow), the Packers Head Coach will get married to Jessica Kress in Maricopa County, Arizona. McCarthy will tie the knot with his parents Joe and Ellen, Jessica's parents Tom and Mary Murphy, McCarthy's daughter Alex and Jessica's two children in attendance. It is the second marriage for both. They say good things come in three's. An NFC Championship Game, a Motorola Coach of the Year award, and a wedding...I would say that qualifies! Coaches work a lot of crazy hours. But in the couple of times I've seen Mike and Jessica together and talked with him, they seem to make it work. I've talked with both at the Lombardi Ball, and they seem like a good fit. Plus Jessica gets along very well with Mike's daughter Alex. Congrats to both on their new life together! DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THE BADGERS!
By Lance Allan Archived Content
"The Badgers play a slow down style." "They score in the 50's almost every game." "Wisconsin can't get up and down the floor at all." Believe it or not, these are actual comments I've heard from the so-called experts at the so-called worldwide leader in sports. Memo to the talking heads in Bristol...do some homework for a change! Dick Bennett is one of my favorite coaches ever, but last I checked...he's not coaching the team, and the Badgers have scored 71 and 72 points against teams that love to run up and down the floor. Hello analysts....just because the Badgers have the best scoring defense in the nation, and have allowed two high scoring teams 56 and 55 points in the postseason doesn't mean they can't play at the other end. They run when the opportunity is there...otherwise Bo and the boys are a half court team. Big difference. See this is my beef. Fans love to watch these "national" experts who aren't experts at all...and believe every word they say just because they are on a major media outlet. These "experts" barely have seen the Badgers compared to those around here who have followed the team every step of the way. And don't even get me started on Bobby Knight. What little respect I had for the man is gone. He thought Kansas State would win, he quit on his team this year (imagine if one of his players did that), and now he's working for the media...the same media that disgusts him. What's more disgusting is that the man is a sellout for grabbing money...I'd have some respect for him if he stayed away. Sorry, it's just a rant I needed to get off my chest. I know I've done my homework. See you in Detroit! Emails at lallan@todaystmj4.com
