Lance Allan: Sports Glance with Lance

I'm Finally A Champion At Something!

Somebody Call Security

  • Print

It's pretty rare when a trophy from a major sporting event, comes your way.

It's even more rare if I have a shot at that trophy.

For once in my life, I got to feel like a champion, as the Wanamaker Trophy came to 720 East Capitol Drive and the TMJ4 Studios.  Clearly I tried to lift it, but security tased me and kept me in check.

You see, this is the replacement.  The original?  Lost by Walter Hagen in 1925.  After a night of partying, he put it in a cab in Chicago...and it ended up found in Detroit, 5 years later.  So the replacement is the trophy, the original now rests in the PGA Historical Center in Florida.

The Wanamaker goes to the winner of the PGA Championship...so this gem will be given to the winner at Whistling Straits in August.  Starting on May 12th, the trophy will be on display at The Shops At Woodlake in Kohler.

Here's a shot of my man Scott Silvestri taking the trophy out of the case, with kid gloves.  Leslie Stachowiak made sure she kept me at arm's length the whole time.

It's stll pretty cool to see last year's champ, Y.E. Yang with his name all by itself on the bottom of the trophy...along with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, and the 2004 Champ Vijay Singh.

And while I may think and feel like I'm a champ by touching the trophy...my name isn't even close to being on the cup.  But it's fun to dream.
