Lance Allan: Sports Glance with Lance
I Should Have Stuck To My Guns on Bryan Bulaga
But Who Would Have Thought This Was Possible?
I went on Wisconsin's Sports Weekend With Jeff Falconio and Greg Matzcyk. I went on the Sports 32 Roundtable with Dennis Krause. I was on the pre-draft Sports Huddle with Bill Michaels. And I talked to Matt LePay and Mike Lucas, all about the Packers need for a left tackle, and specifically Bryan Bulaga.
But as the time got closer to the draft, I convinced myself...and had others convince me...that Bulaga would likely be out of their reach at 23, and they'd have to trade up to get him.
Why didn't I stick to my guns? There he was, a top 10 value at 23...and the Packers couldn't wait to snap him up.
What do I like about him? That he only allowed 2 sacks last year, both to Michigan's Brandon Graham shortly after he came back from a thyroid virus. And then was dominant against Derrick Morgan in the Orange Bowl, a DE that went 7 picks ahead of him in the draft.
The negative? He struggled against speed rushers like Graham and Wisconsin's O'Brien Schofield, and his strength needs to be improved.
But one need is certainly addressed. And now if the Packers get a pass rushing LB, a corner, a return specialist and a punter....you might want to have stand by tickets to Dallas and thoughts of the Super Bowl in mind.
